A Life with Asthma

Life has been a struggle for Karen ever since she was a little girl.  She was very allergic to dust mites, pollen coming from trees, and other allergens that seemed to surround her everywhere she went.  Growing up did not only mean getting braces for her teeth, growing her hair long, or moving up several sizes.  It also meant the daily battle with her own immune system that over-reacted to almost anything microscopic.  He body’s anti-allergic response included the secretion of above-normal amounts of fluid in her nostrils and mucus inside her chest.  The moment she gets an allergic reaction, her chest would suddenly feel as if a block of cement had been hurled at her.  He difficulty of breathing was so severe that should would almost turn blue from lack of oxygen.  For most of her childhood and teenage years, she felt miserable about the repeated asthma attacks that almost always happened in public.  The difficulty of having asthma was made worse by the embarrassment she had to endure whenever she desperately gasped for air in front of people.

Like Karen, millions of people around the world suffer from asthma.  In the United States alone, about 20 million people have been diagnosed with this chronic disease. Of this number of asthma sufferers, nearly nine million are children. An asthma attack affects and produces a constriction of the airways. The airways are the tubes through which air flows in and out of our lungs. The inside walls of these airways are become swollen during an asthma attack.  The inflammation of the airways is actually an allergic reaction to microscopic particles Once the inflammation occurs, an asthma sufferer may produce wheezing sounds or may experience excessive coughing.

To date, there is still no cure for asthma but it can be prevented or its symptoms can be managed.    One simple way to help prevent asthma is to prevent pollutants and other allergens from proliferating in  your home or work environment.  Hygiene at home and at the office can help control the spread of viruses and bacteria that may also trigger allergies and other more serious ailments.  While there are varying degrees of severity of asthma attacks and sensitivity to “triggering elements”, keeping the surroundings as allergen-free as possible would benefit all asthmatics.

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs To The Rescue

Aside from environmental sanitation, another option to control asthma and its debilitating symptoms is the use of medications.  Anti inflammatory drugs are now prescribed for patients who need immediate help in controlling asthma. These anti inflammatory drugs help reduce the swelling of swelling of air passageways and, as a result, prevent wheezing and coughing.

The main types of anti-inflammatory drugs are:

1. Inhaled corticosteroids – Considered as one of the most effective medications to reduce airway inflammation. This drug helps reduces the need for hospitalization and provides better asthma control.

2. Mast cell stabilizers – It works by preventing the release of irritating and inflammatory substances from immune cells called mast cells.

3. Dry powder inhaler –  A medication in the form of a dry powder that is administered through a small device called a dry powder inhaler or DPI. This inhaler delivers the medication to the lungs as you inhale through the device. It does not contain propellants and it can be used by young asthmatics starting at age five and up.

4. Nebulizer – This is a device used to administer medication in the form of liquid mist to the air ways.  Also known as “atomizers”, the nebulizer is used to pumps air or liquid medicine in vapor form. By inhaling the medicine through the nebulizer, an asthmatic is able to reduce the symptoms of the disease.

Managing your Asthma

To help a patient manage the symptoms of this condition, doctors usually use a tool called Spirometry to diagnose asthma.  The tool is also used to evaluate the pulmonary functions of a patient.  It also helps the doctor obtain valuable information about the lung condition of an asthma patient.   Optimal medication, continuation of normal activities, and the reduction of trips to the hospital are only some of the goals that every doctor want to achieve in treating an asthma patient.  Depending on the severity of the condition, the doctor may opt to prescribe anti inflammatory drugs that would prevent attacks that constrict a patient’s breathing.

Asthma is a very uncomfortable condition to deal with, especially on a daily basis.  But it should not rob someone out of the joys and happiness of life.  Even asthmatics can live relatively normal lives.  Through proper medication and allergen management, asthmatics can pursue active, fulfilling lives.

Lisa was at a birthday party of one of her dear officemates. She has not been fond of attending parties at her age, which is 23. As a child, she was not really into attending parties even of her friends, neighbors and relatives.

No, don’t get it wrong. It is not that Lisa is virtually and practically not sociable. She is very friendly and very outgoing. Lisa admits that she has been afraid of attending parties, especially children’s parties when she was still a kid.

Lisa has a deep dark secret. Don’t get it wrong again. This girl is not a character to judge. Lisa has chicken allergy. It means she can never take in chicken meat because adverse reactions occur in her body whenever she does that.

So that explains why she was not fond of parties, especially when she was just a kid. Most children parties cater or serve fast foods and one of the most popular food served is chicken meat.

It is because more people prefer chicken meat than any other because it is considered to have less fat.. Besides, it is one of the more flexible edible meat around.

Chicken allergy

If you have the symptoms that would be described later, then, you are positive to have chicken allergy. Take note that allergy to chicken is somehow similar to allergy to other meat.

Just like there are people allergic to pork and beef, there are also people allergic to chicken meat. Some people, however, are allergic to chicken but are not allergic to chicken eggs. There are those, on the other hand, that are allergic to both.

In the United States, statistics have it that about 0.6% to 5% of overall reported food allergies annually are chicken meat allergy.

Manifestations of chicken meat allergy

Among the most common and prevalent manifestation or symptom of chicken allergy are frequent infections like ear infections and bladder infections; asthma attack; bed-wetting; eczema; skin rashes; acne; unusual fatigue; insomnia; migraine; depression and chronic disturbance in the gastrointestinal system.

Some people with chicken allergy even develop sinusitis which is somehow unusual if they don’t really have the history. Hives and joint pains are also prevalent to them.

Symptoms of chicken meat allergy occur or show up after several minutes of in take. To some people, the reaction could surface in as fast as at least ten minutes, while in others it can be as slow and prolonged to take up to 24 to 48 hours.

Treatment and prevention of chicken allergy

Chicken meat contains allergens or allergy-producing substances that are called purines. These substances are mainly cited for the onset of several other diseases like gout. Gouts are characterized by the formation or onset of kidney stones.

Purines in chicken meat may lead to excessive uric acid accumulation in the body that can possibly lead to what is called kidney stones.

Thus, if chicken allergy symptoms show up, it is important to immediately consult or seek your doctor’s help. That would prevent further ailments or disease from coming out.

The doctor will have to prescribe several medications to treat or help curtail chicken allergy.

The best prevention would be to avoid eating chicken meat. Allergies to substances, you should remember, is not curable but only treatable.

There are a lot of other meat that could taste better than chicken meat, right?

Allergy season is here, and that spells trouble for millions of Americans.

Allergy triggers, like oak, ash, alder, elm, poplar, sycamore, grasses, molds, mulberry, and ragweed, can cause anything from sneezing to watery eyes to fever.

Experts estimate that 20 percent of Americans suffer from allergies. And that number is even higher in certain regions of the country. For example, almost half of the population in the Southwest fights the allergy battle every year.

To help keep allergens out of the air in their homes, many people use special filters as part of their air conditioning system. But what about the millions of allergy sufferers using evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners?

Evaporative coolers, also referred to as “swamp coolers,” bring in outside air to cool the home, but most units have no built-in air filtration.

Coolers generally consist of a fan and damp pads. Units cool outside air by about 20 degrees by drawing the air through the wet pads and blowing it into the house. As opposed to air conditioners, which make circulating air drier, coolers slightly increase the humidity of the air.

Now, cooler owners can filter the air coming into their homes. CoolPad Plus is an evaporative cooler pad that provides both high-efficiency cooling and allergy relief. Coolpad Plus has a special layer of polyester to provide increased air filtration of pollen, mold spores, dust and ragweed. It is designed to help relieve allergy symptoms and also to keep the cooler and home cleaner.

Coolpad Plus removes up to 89 percent of pollen, dust and airborne particles. Eight out of 10 people say CoolPad Plus out- performs their previous cooler pad, and it lasts twice as long as competing brands to cool all season long. Rigid pad construction prevents sagging and hot air leaks. CoolPad Plus also contains a special wetting agent for faster cooling and has more than 190,000 water absorbing baffles per pad for better comfort.

Five tips to help control your allergies

Almost 40 million Americans face seasonal allergies, which usually begin in the spring and can last through the first frost. They’re often triggered by pollens, molds or other airborne allergens. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, Americans spend as much as $4.5 billion annually on medications and doctor visits to treat their allergies.

The first step in treatment is to reduce exposure to specific allergens. If that’s not possible, managing symptoms through medication is often next.

Here are some tips to help control your allergies:

Know Your Triggers

To avoid an allergen, you need to know what it is. Physicians can determine what you’re allergic to by reviewing your personal and medical history or doing a physical exam. In some cases a skin, patch or blood test may be used to confirm suspected allergens.

Create a Sneeze-free Environment

A few changes at home can make a difference. Use an air conditioner whenever possible, make your home “dust mite” unfriendly by vacuuming often, use hypoallergenic products and check pollen counts before going out. If they’re high, stay inside.

Find the Right Remedy

Antihistamines reduce symptoms and work best if taken before exposure to allergens. Decongestants should only be used for a short time as they can worsen the condition. Nasal sprays, known as inhaled steroids, are another option.

Know the OTC Options

Doctors may recommend over-the-counter medications as a first-line treatment. Those that include diphenhydramine have been an allergy staple for years but can cause drowsiness. Newer non-sedating antihistamines, such as Claritin, are now available without a prescription. OTCs are usually far less expensive than prescription drugs and are now covered under pretax health care accounts, such as FSAs and HSAs.

Consider Generics

They can be as effective as brand-name medications and cost 30 to 80 percent less. Popular allergy medications Allegra and Flonase are now available as generics-fexofenadine and fluticasone. According to a recent Medco analysis, 80 percent of all Allegra prescriptions were filled with a generic at retail pharmacies within 30 days of its introduction.

Discuss the options with your doctor. With the right knowledge and treatments, you can spend more time outside and less time concerned about watery eyes, a runny nose and the cost of medication.

These days of increasing pollution levels mean that more and more people are becoming victims of a variety of allergens, which are the various substances that cause an allergic reaction. These can be anything from a certain type of food coloring to pet dander or even a certain chemical that is present in seafood. There are also more and more children being born with allergies, so there is an all-over rise in the incidence of allergies. Given the impact that allergies can have on a person’s life, there are a variety of devices available that can help to decrease the advent of certain allergens in a specific environment. This has helped make the lives of many people who have severe allergies a lot easier and raised their quality of life.

There are, however, no methods of curing allergies and therefore the best measure that can be taken is to create an environment where the occurrence of the allergens is greatly reduced. The severity of the allergy also has a bearing on what measures must be taken to ensure that there are no allergens present in a given environment. For example, if the allergen is contained in food then especially stringent measures must be taken to ensure that none is mixed with other food, since the worst type of allergy reactions tend to be when somebody swallows something that contains the allergen.

The worst allergic reaction is when a person goes into anaphylactic shock, which can lead to death if not treated in time. Even if the allergy is not as severe as that, there is still the everyday discomfort that will lower the quality of life for anyone who has to live with this. The type and severity of the allergy will be the determining steps when deciding what steps need to be taken to ensure that person suffering from the allergy is kept out of harms way. The simplest step is to avoid the source of the allergens, but in some cases this may well be impossible.

One of the most common allergies is stated as being allergic to “dust”, this is however a misconception. There are very few people who are actually allergic to dust, but there are a very large portion of people who are allergic to dust mites and their excretions. These dust mites are commonly found in household dust, pet dander and feathers. There are very few people that can create an environment that is completely free of these allergens without going to massive expense. There are however products available that can decrease the amount of these allergens in the immediate environment, particularly in the bed room.

There are products available that can decrease the occurrence of allergens that commonly occur in the home. These can help to return the standard of living for those with mild allergies to that of those who do not suffer from allergies. These products can also help those who suffer from severe allergies, but are unlikely to completely eliminate the source of the allergy, depending on what exactly the source is. The biggest aid to those with severe allergies is a constant supply of anti-histamines. The products will help to stop the further aggravation of the allergic reactions.
